Half-Life 2 is the game that the default content of Garry's Mod comes with. The game was developed and released by Valve in 2004 after releasing Counter Strike: Source, the first game to use the Source Engine (not GoldSource). The story takes place through the silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman and is the leader of a resistance against the Combine Overwatch.

Unlike other game content, players do not need Half-Life 2 to play Garry's Mod. Only a Source Engine game. All base content except the maps are included.
